So… Where does your story begin? When you’re born? When you’re older? When you’ve passed on?
Or does it begin long before you even take your first breath?
Akaraka is a new play, centering around the experience of a young, Nigerian woman at a crossroad with her inner desires, and her ancestral belonging. The play is a celebration of culture, exploring the complexities that come with identity, love, and the reckoning of sacrifice. Our past is inextricable to who we are.
Shortlisted for the Griffin Award, Akaraka reminds us that by making peace with our history, we have autonomy to create our future.
