Signature Theatre Company was founded by James Houghton in 1991 as a company that dedicated each season to a singular playwright. Since 2012, Signature has presented the works of multiple established and emerging playwrights each season, though playwrights in residence often have new works included in multiple seasons in a row. That same year was when Signature opened its home theatre, the Pershing Square Signature Center, on West 42nd Street. The space houses three venues — the 294-seat Irene Diamond Stage, the 191-seat Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre, and the 199-250-seat Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre — in addition to a cafe, bar and lounge that are open to the public.
