About The Waverly Gallery

Iconic actor, comedian, writer, and director Elaine May returns to Broadway for the first time in 50 years in Academy Award winner Kenneth Lonergan’s acclaimed memory play, "The Waverly Gallery."

A powerfully poignant and often hilarious play, "The Waverly Gallery" is about the final years of a generous, chatty, and feisty grandmother’s final battle against Alzheimer’s disease. Gladys is an old-school lefty and social activist and longtime owner of a small art gallery in Greenwich Village. The play explores her fight to retain her independence and the subsequent effect of her decline on her family, especially her grandson. More than a memory play, The Waverly Gallery captures the humor and strength of a family in the face of crisis.

Directed by Drama Desk and Obie Award winner Lila Neugebauer (in her Broadway debut), the cast includes Grammy Award winner, and Academy and Golden Globe Award nominee, Elaine May, one half of the legendary comedy duo, Nichols and May, whose landmark show "An Evening With Mike Nichols and Elaine May" famously played the John Golden Theatre; Academy Award nominee Lucas Hedges; Tony Award winner Joan Allen; and, in his third Lonergan play, Michael Cera.

Originally premiering at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in August 1999, "The Waverly Gallery" is a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

More information about The Waverly Gallery

Kenneth Lonergan’s “The Waverly Gallery” charts the final years of a feisty grandmother as she slowly loses her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Gladys lives in an apartment down the hall from her grandson, Daniel, who serves as the narrator for the evening and takes the audience through Gladys’s decline. A former lawyer and social activist, Gladys now runs a small art gallery in Greenwich Village, where a young artist named Don comes to be the last to hang his work there. Lonergan takes notes from his own life to explore an octogenarian’s fight to retain her independence when her body begins to fail her.

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2001, the play premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 1999 and later debuted off Broadway at the Promenade Theater in 2000. Making its Broadway debut, the memory play explores how a family stays strong amid heartbreak and loss.

Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

What to watch for

“The Waverly Gallery” marks actor Michael Cera’s third Broadway credit, following “This Is Our Youth” and “Lobby Hero,” all of which are by Kenneth Lonergan.

The play is produced by Scott Rudin, who also produced Kenneth Lonergan’s film “Margaret” and the 2014 Broadway production of Lonergan’s “This Is Our Youth.”

Elaine May, Michael Cera’s 86-year-old co-star, is also a playwright. Most recently on Broadway, her one-act “George is Dead,” starring Marlo Thomas, was performed as part of the anthology play “Relatively Speaking” in 2011.

“The Waverly Gallery” was inspired by Kenneth Lonergan’s last years with his grandmother.
