After a smash-hit run Off-Broadway, HARVEY FIERSTEIN's "Torch Song" heads to Broadway for a strictly limited engagement. This critically acclaimed production of the Tony Award-winning comedy stars Drama Desk Award winner MICHAEL URIE ("Younger," "Ugly Betty," "Buyer & Cellar") and Academy Award and Tony winner MERCEDES RUEHL ("The Fisher King," "Lost in Yonkers") and is directed by Tony nominee MOISÉS KAUFMAN ("The Laramie Project," "I Am My Own Wife").
Hilarious and heart-wrenching, "Torch Song" follows Arnold Beckoff's odyssey to find happiness in New York. All he wants is a husband, a child and a pair of bunny slippers that fit, but a visit from his overbearing mother reminds him that he needs one thing more: respect.
Join Arnold on this all too human journey about the families we're born into, the families we choose and the battles to bring them all home.

Inspired by playwright Harvey Fierstein’s own coming-of-age story as a gay man, “Torch Song” follows Arnold Beckoff, a Jewish drag queen on a quest to find love happiness in 1970s New York City. For him, that includes a husband, child and all the other “normalcies” obtained by his heterosexual peers. Throughout the course of “Torch Song,” various men come in and out of Arnold’s life, including Ed, a self-defined straight man whom he meets in the back of a gay bar; Arnold’s hot young boyfriend, Alan; and David, a gay teen whom Arnold takes under his wing and adopts. When Arnold’s mother visits from Miami and is exposed to Arnold’s world, audiences are subject to an intimate conversation that quickly goes south.
Tony Award-winning playwright Fierstein, who starred in the original Broadway production, has condensed his original “Torch Song Trilogy,” comprised of three one acts, into a new version for Broadway. Michael Urie stars as Arnold in this production, directed by Moisés Kaufman.
Recommended for 12 + (Adult situations, language) Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
“Torch Song” returns to its original Broadway home, 36 years later. “Torch Song Trilogy” opened in 1982 at the Little Theater, now the Helen Hayes.
Revisiting the work decades later, Fierstein said this production of “Torch Song” is “thrilling.” In fact, he concluded: “The audience’s laughter seemed heartier, their tears more profound, and I could not have been happier.”
Actor Michael Urie was hand-selected by Fierstein’s manager, as well as director Moisés Kaufman to star in the play’s first revival with Fierstein’s direct involvement.
The play’s central character, Arnold Beckoff, was originally performed by Fierstein and inspired by his own coming out.
