When the madness of the world is too much to bear, we take refuge in the stories we love. Tony® and Grammy® award-winning creators of Spring Awakening, STEVEN SATER and DUNCAN SHEIK, reunite for their new musical, inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and directed and co-written by JESSIE NELSON (Waitress).
In the rubble of the London Blitz of World War II, Alice Spencer’s budding teen life is turned upside down, and she and her dear friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When the ailing Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland.
As they travel through the tale, Alice By Heart explores the poignancy of first love, coming to terms with loss, and finding the courage to move forward. This world premiere musical encourages us all to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times.
Alice by Heart will run at the Newman Mills Theater as part of MCC's inaugural season.

Alice falls down the rabbit hole once again in the new musical “Alice By Heart,” inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic tale “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” This time, however, “Spring Awakening” creators Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik set the story amid the aftermath of the London Blitz of World War II in the troubled 1940s. With Alice Spencer’s (Molly Gordon) best friend Alfred (Colton Ryan) sick and dying, the teens decide to dust off their beloved childhood book for an escape to a magical world fueled by Alice’s imagination.
Co-written by “Waitress” writer Jessie Nelson, who also directs, and Sater with music by Sheik, “Alice By Heart” mirrors the political landscape of today and shows how the power of love, courage and imagination can help individuals navigate dark times and devastation. “This show is about the power of art — of literature — and the imagination to get us through chaotic times,” says Sater, “which is what we’re really living in.”
Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s last collaboration, “Spring Awakening,” took home Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Book (Sater) and Best Score (Sater and Sheik), among others.
About 10 years ago, a friend suggested to Steven Sater that he and Duncan Sheik work together on a musical about “Alice in Wonderland.”
“Alice By Heart” was indirectly inspired by “Spring Awakening” star Lea Michele. After Steven Sater went with Michele to see a troupe of young actors perform, he says, “I looked at Lea, who was in her early 20s … Then it hit me: This piece could be about how to leave childhood behind.”
Songwriter Duncan Sheik says the score of “Alice By Heart” has a more “psychedelic feel” than “Spring Awakening.”
“Waitress” writer Jessie Nelson makes her Off-Broadway directorial debut with “Alice By Heart.”
