About Girl From the North Country

2022 Tony Award® winner for best orchestrations.

Playwright Conor McPherson reimagines the songs of the legendary Bob Dylan in GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY — the soaring masterwork about the dreams we keep close and the people we hold dear.

At a guesthouse at the crossroads of the nation, wanderers face a turning point in their lives. Each one is driven by a dream — some for work, some for love, all for hope. They each have a song to sing, and once they do, their lives will change forever.

During the critically praised, sold-out run at the Public Theater, The New York Times raved GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY “is as close as mortals come to heaven on earth.” Now, this work of extraordinary beauty is on Broadway at last. Don't miss this Grammy Award nominee for Best Musical Theater Album. Running through June 19.

What happens when a Bible salesman and an out-of-luck boxer knock on your door? The owners and guests of an inn are about to find out. Get Girl From the North Country tickets on TodayTix.

It’s 1934 in Duluth, Minnesota at the start of the Girl From the North Country musical, and the Great Depression threatens to fully dismantle the lives underneath the roof of an old, rundown guest house owned by the Laine family. Nick, the owner of the guest house spreads his thin time between his wife Elizabeth, who has been stricken with dementia, and a widow staying in a free room. The couple’s adopted teenage daughter is pregnant and their son is riding a fine line between alcoholism and livelihood. One rainy night, when two new tenants make their way to the guest house — everything changes.

Bob Dylan’s music sits at the heart and soul of Girl From the North Country. 19 of his songs (both old favorites and hidden gems) weave their way through the fabric of this story. The show includes hit songs such as “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Make Your Feel My Love,” “Forever Young,” and (the titular) “Girl From the North Country,” and Dylan’s songs have “never sounded quite so heartbreakingly personal and universal at the same time" (The New York Times). The musical is written and directed by playwright Conor McPherson, and Girl From the North Country lands in New York after acclaimed runs in London and off Broadway.

What to Watch For

  • How can Girl From the North Country remain true to its 1930 setting? The orchestra plays Bob Dylan's music on instruments from the 1930s to accompany the actors throughout the show.
  • Writer and director Conor McPherson is a two-time Tony Award nominee for Shining City and The Seafarer.
  • How did Conor McPherson bring this story to life? He was inspired by Eugene O’Neill when he was writing the script for Girl From the North Country, as the boarding house and the people coming in and out resemble O’Neill’s epic works like The Iceman Cometh.
  • Recommended for ages 12 and up. Children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.
