About Hangmen on Broadway

From the devilishly inspired mind of Martin McDonagh—Academy Award®–winning writer of THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI—comes HANGMEN, a killer comedy nominated for 5 Tony Awards® including Best Play. What’s Britain’s second-most famous executioner to do now that hanging has been abolished? Drink, of course. But when a cub reporter and a mysterious stranger turn up at his pub, everything hangs in the balance. HANGMEN marks McDonagh’s seventh play on Broadway, following his Tony-nominated productions of THE PILLOWMAN and THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE. Winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Play and Set Design, HANGMEN plays a strictly limited engagement at the Golden Theatre after multiple sold-out engagements in London and Off-Broadway’s Atlantic Theatre Company.

More information about Hangmen on Broadway

After being cut short in 2020 and leaving audiences hanging for two years, Martin McDonagh's Olivier Award-winning comedy play Hangmen is resuming Broadway performances. Get Hangmen tickets on TodayTix now.

The year is 1963, and Harry Wade has just killed another man who’d been sentenced to death — all in a day’s work for the professional hangman (the second-best in all of Britain!). Two years later, however, Harry is knee-deep in a new career; he owns a pub in Northern England. On the day that capital punishment has been abolished in the United Kingdom, a journalist walks into his bar to ask his opinions on the matter. In the Hangmen play, Harry insists on keeping his thoughts to himself… until a stranger comes into the mix and stirs the pot over a couple of pints.

David Threlfall stars in the dark comedy by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh (The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Lieutenant of Inishmore, The Cripple of Inishmaan) and directed by Matthew Dunster. Hailed by Ben Brantley of The New York Times as “criminally enjoyable,” the play about seeking revenge comes to Broadway following its world premiere at London’s Royal Court Theater and an acclaimed Off-Broadway engagement at Atlantic Theater Company, the first production of Hangmen in New York.

What to Watch For

  • Hangmen was first a sensation in England, the country where it's set, as the West End production won the 2016 Olivier Award for Best New Play.
    • Playwright Martin McDonagh is a multi-hyphenate, writing for stage and screen. Recently, he wrote and directed a new film, The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, set for an October 22 release.
  • Onstage hangings do occur throughout the course of the play — though, thanks to Anna Fleischle’s Olivier Award-winning scenic design, no one is hurt in the process. The gallows are functional, though. No wonder she won an Olivier Award for her design!
  • One of the biggest challenges of designing Hangmen, says scenic designer Anna Fleischle, was to design three separate settings for the play and make the transitions between them seamless. For example, the set of a prison cell eventually rises up, and its floor becomes the ceiling of a totally different space.
  • Game of Thrones actor Mark Addy starred as Harry in the Off-Broadway premiere of Hangmen. David Threlfall now holds the role, but another actor from Westeros is in the Broadway production: Alfie Allen, who played Theon Greyjoy on the HBO show and now makes his Broadway debut as the mysterious Londoner Mooney in Hangmen.
  • Hangmen was almost put to death amid the pandemic; the show was supposed to open in 2020, but the production was initially canceled for good when theatres shut down after just a few performances. But now, it's been resurrected and is getting a second life on Broadway after all!
