The Jenkins family is gathering for the funeral of their dear departed patriarch and Baneatta, the eldest daughter, needs everything to go smoothly. But her sister Beverly has some differing views on dress code, her granddaughter La’Trice can’t mind her own business, and her grandson Kenny plans to show up with a Jewish boyfriend. Then, when a family secret walks in the door, Beanatta’s dreams of a smooth celebration go flying out the window.

Chicken & Biscuits is an uproarious new play by Douglas Lyons full of laughter and love. Featuring a mostly Black cast in a season of unprecedented representation for Black creatives on Broadway, Chicken & Biscuits also marks the Broadway debut for both Lyons and director Zhailon Levingston, who at 27 becomes the youngest Black director in Broadway history.

Before Chicken & Biscuits on Broadway, the play began life at New York’s Queens Theatre in early 2020, where it played for less than two weeks before its run was cut short by the Covid-19 pandemic. Now this universal tale finds its new home at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre, where it promises to leave audiences begging for seconds. Chicken & Biscuits tickets will be available soon.

• Playwright Douglas Lyons and lead producer E. Clayton Cornelious met as ensemble members in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.
• Chicken & Biscuits is one of seven plays by Black writers joining Broadway’s 2021-22 season, a historic first in Broadway’s history.
• The Chicken & Biscuits play is at Circle in the Square Theatre, which uses a ‘thrust’ stage that extends into the audience on three sides, and is one of Broadway’s most intimate spaces at 840 seats.
• Musical theatre legend Norm Lewis makes his first appearance in a Broadway play in Chicken & Biscuits.
• The production marks the Broadway debuts of 18 members of its company, creative and producing teams in total.
