Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson returns to MTC for the Broadway debut of his brilliant solo play celebrating the strong, big-hearted woman who raised him: Miss Rachel. In a 1950s boarding house outside Buffalo, Nanny, as she was affectionately called, opened her doors to anyone and everyone in need of kindness, hope, compassion and care. Giving a tour-de-force performance accompanied by live music written by acclaimed composer Bill Sims, Jr. and performed by Blues Hall of Fame Guitarist Junior Mack, Santiago-Hudson embodies more than 20 vibrant characters, creating a richly textured reminiscence that’s inspiring, uplifting and right at home on Broadway.

In 1950s Buffalo a big-hearted woman known as “Miss Rachel” threw open the doors of her boarding house to anyone and everyone in need — including a young Ruben Santiago-Hudson. Now a Tony Award winning legend of the stage, Santiago-Hudson returns to Broadway to play both “Miss Rachel” and over 20 other characters in his play Lackawanna Blues, a new solo work which he also wrote and directed. Lackawanna Blues tickets will be available soon. Set an alert for Lackawanna Blues Broadway tickets.
With Lackawanna Blues on Broadway, this singular artist celebrates the kind, strong woman who raised him, and the enduring power of compassion. He is joined by Blues Hall of Fame guitarist Junior Mack, performing original music by legendary blues composer Bill Sims, Jr.. Santiago-Hudson’s tour-de-force performance will mark the first Broadway production by a non-profit company since the shutdown of March 2020.
Lackawanna Blues made its world premiere off-Broadway in 2001 at The Public Theater. A film adaptation was later released by HBO in 2005. The MTC production marks the play’s Broadway debut.
