About Lackawanna Blues on Broadway

Tony Award winner Ruben Santiago-Hudson returns to MTC for the Broadway debut of his brilliant solo play celebrating the strong, big-hearted woman who raised him: Miss Rachel. In a 1950s boarding house outside Buffalo, Nanny, as she was affectionately called, opened her doors to anyone and everyone in need of kindness, hope, compassion and care. Giving a tour-de-force performance accompanied by live music written by acclaimed composer Bill Sims, Jr. and performed by Blues Hall of Fame Guitarist Junior Mack, Santiago-Hudson embodies more than 20 vibrant characters, creating a richly textured reminiscence that’s inspiring, uplifting and right at home on Broadway.

With Lackawanna Blues on Broadway, this singular artist celebrates the kind, strong woman who raised him, and the enduring power of compassion. He is joined by Blues Hall of Fame guitarist Junior Mack, performing original music by legendary blues composer Bill Sims, Jr.. Santiago-Hudson’s tour-de-force performance will mark the first Broadway production by a non-profit company since the shutdown of March 2020.

Lackawanna Blues made its world premiere off-Broadway in 2001 at The Public Theater. A film adaptation was later released by HBO in 2005. The MTC production marks the play’s Broadway debut.

What to Watch For

  • Lackawanna Blues re-opens Manhattan Theatre Club’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Broadway. Ruben Santiago-Hudson recently joined MTC’s leadership team as an artistic advisor.
  • Tony Award winner George C. Wolfe programmed Lackawanna Blues at The Public Theater in 2001, where he was artistic director at the time. Wolfe later directed the film adaptation. Santiago-Hudson and Wolfe re-teamed on last year’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom for Netflix.
  • Both Santiago-Hudson and composer Bill Sims, Jr. won OBIE Award special citations for the show’s 2001 off-Broadway production.
  • Bill Sims, Jr. performed his own music nightly in the original production. Sims, Jr. died in 2019 — on Broadway, his compositions will be performed by Junior Mack.
  • Celebrated stage and screen actress S. Epatha Merkerson played the role of “Miss Rachel” in the play’s 2005 HBO film adaptation.
