“I remember the smell, the taste of copper on my tongue. I close my eyes and it's all I see: an ocean of red, waves of it, the sound of screams coming as the tides pull in and out, the voices never quite going away, just getting quieter and quieter, always in the back of my mind.”
REVOLUTION tells the story of a young couple living in Egypt during the 2011 and 2013 protests. Joseph is an American journalist on assignment in Cairo. While there he breaks his arm, prompting him to meet Masika, an Egyptian doctor. They fall in love and quickly get married. They promise to leave Cairo for America the second it feels right, but that time never came.
“For a while there it seemed as though everything was going to be fine, that the country would repair itself. There was a lull and it was in that lull that I wanted us to leave, to be rid of the bad memories and move to America.”
In the summer of 2013 during a peaceful protest in Rabaa Square the military came in and began shooting. A minimum of 904 people died. REVOLUTION explores how people cope with trauma, how they navigate the world after facing death, and how their own actions affect the ones they love.
