Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth is a thrilling whirlwind of disaster, as it follows a family through a war-torn world, reckoning with the society that perpetuates both the destruction and reconstruction of humanity, time and time again. In Wilder's The Skin of Our Teeth play, every time the Antrobus family thinks that the human race has finally saved itself, they are brought to the brink of extinction once again. Encountering catastrophes like an ice age, a flood, and a great war, It’s almost like an apocalyptic Groundhog Day – but does the cycle ever end?
Wilder’s beloved preceding play, Our Town, tackles a similar topic, but in a more subtle way: both plays feature family as a central figure. While Our Town primarily focuses on the timeline of one family, from past to present, The Skin of Our Teeth serves as a thought-provoking foil, scrambling the most devastating events of history into a non-linear fiasco as the Antrobus family perseveres through it all.
