March on! Suffs on Broadway, winner of 2024 Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Book, turns the clock one century back to the onset of the women’s suffrage movement in America. Suffs — written and composed by award-winning theatremaker Shaina Taub in her Broadway debut and starring Taub, Nikki M. James, Jenn Colella, Emily Skinner, and more — echoes their voices and examines the lives and legacies of the movement’s key leaders. Get Suffs tickets in New York on TodayTix.
The 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920, giving women the right to vote. The legendary women celebrated in Suffs, who had taken to the streets since 1913, are to thank. But how did seven years of protests lead to progress? With an honest lens, Suffs explores all the events leading up to this historic moment for women’s rights, and the impactful, although imperfect, women behind them.
Suffs shows not only the groundbreaking tools of protest created by the suffragists, but the cracks in the foundation that they built. Suffs allows American audiences in the 2020s to look back on this crucial 1920s movement.

Most people have heard of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, but they're far from the only influential suffragists. In fact, the main characters of Suffs — including Alice Paul, Ida B. Wells, and Inez Milholland — often clash with Anthony's generation of older suffragists who don't believe in disruptive protests as a means of activism. Paul and co. triumphed, but the musical also sheds light on their imperfections, too — namely, how the white leaders often pushed activists of color to the sidelines. Indeed, the Nineteenth Amendment only applied to white women.
Suffs premiered at The Public Theater in spring 2022 with a cast including Jenn Colella, Nikki M. James, Phillipa Soo, and Taub herself.

Leigh Silverman directs Suffs on Broadway. She also staged the show's 2022 Off-Broadway premiere, and she earned a 2014 Tony nomination for directing Violet starring Sutton Foster.
Suffs includes songs like "The Young Are At the Gates," "Ladies," "This Girl," "The Strong One," and "How Long." Shaina Taub wrote the music and lyrics for all the songs in Suffs.
Suffs has yet to set an age recommendation for Broadway.
Suffs uniquely champions trailblazing women — both the suffragists of the 20th century and the modern-day female creative team making history by bringing this musical to Broadway. The show's riveting songs and story paint the suffragists as imperfect but, just like the musical itself, unforgettable.
