Our Brother's Son is a play primarily about three middle-aged siblings — Leo, Gail, and David — and how they and their spouses are rocked by a medical crisis. Leo ends up having renal failure when he takes over-the-counter painkillers rather than seeking a doctor's counsel, and being a poor dialysis candidate, he has to turn to his family members for a kidney donation.

To determine if they're a match, Leo's siblings undergo genetic testing that reveals a deeply hidden family secret. Torn apart by the revelation, each member of the family struggles with whether to help their siblings or preserve themselves.

Gluck teams up with director David Alpert to premiere Our Brother's Son in New York. It is Gluck's second show following Unlikely Heroes, which premiered in Florida in 2016 to positive reviews.

What to Watch For

  • It's fitting that Charles Gluck writes dramas with medical themes. Before retiring and becoming a playwright, he was a gastroenterologist for 28 years!
  • Gluck also did stand-up comedy on the side for 12 of the years he was a doctor, so you can expect moments of humor in his plays, too, even though they deal with heavy themes.
  • Our Brother's Son is Gluck's second play, and it's actually a sequel of sorts. The characters in this play were originally introduced in Unlikely Heroes, which sees them deal with an assortment of sibling, parental, and marital conflicts.
