The Tetzlaff Quartet, praised for its “dazzling palette of sounds” (The Washington Post), shows the fascinating ways three composers bring their unique voices to the string quartet. Haydn’s quartet is one of his most intense; a Sturm und Drang masterpiece, it opens with an agitated theme and culminates in a dazzling display of counterpoint. Webern’s brief pieces surprise with their vast range of color and expressive power, while Brahms takes a different approach. His expansive quartet is filled with clever canons (where a melody is played and then imitated after a brief delay), warm melodies, and a lively Hungarian dance finale.
