About Kate Berlant's "Kate"

She’s back. Comedian Kate Berlant returns for another engagement of Kate, following a sold-out, critically acclaimed run earlier this fall. Get Kate tickets on TodayTix.

Hailed as the “grande dame of experimental comedy” by The New York Times, Berlant holds nothing back in this stand-up comedy show about, well, herself. “Excellent theatre needs only three simple things: a great performer, a clean stage, and a little bit of magic (this point is punctuated with a handful of glitter),” New York Theatre Guide raves. “Kate delivers.”

Get an exclusive peek into the A League of Their Own star’s upbringing, early career, and revelations she’s never shared before. Kind of. Is Kate really sharing her true self, or just playing a character that happens to share her name? Berlant and director Bo Burnham are a dream team on Kate, which is as much of a love letter to live theatre as a total mockery of everything about it.

More information about Kate Berlant's "Kate"

Kate Berlant makes her long-awaited return to the NYC stage with Kate, her most personal stand-up show yet. She inhabits numerous characters and shares stories about how she got to where she is.

Berlant has been deliberately tight-lipped about her show, revealing no other details. She did, however, release a statement that says, "All my previous work has been a pale shadow, a humiliation, an impotent suggestion always gesturing toward, yet never quite arriving… until now. I can’t wait to welcome you into my home, which is the theatre."

Berlant has performed stand-up since she was an undergraduate student at New York University; her first gig was an open-mic night in a basement at the school. Initial gigs like that one eventually led her to perform at comedy festivals worldwide, in cities like Montreal, Edinburgh, and New York. In recent years, Berlant has taken her comedy talents to the screen, landing scene-stealing roles in Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You and the HBO show The Other Two. She has also appeared in Search Party and High Maintenance, and voice acted on BoJack Horseman.

She teams up with an equally acclaimed comedian for Kate in New York: Emmy and Grammy Award winner Bo Burnham, who directs the production. His streamed musical comedy special Inside was an instant critical and popular success in 2021, and his song "All Eyes on Me" from the special earned the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Burnam has written and performed three other stand-up specials, directed and produced shows for other comedians including Jerrod Carmichael and Chris Rock, and directed and written the indie movie Eighth Grade. Like Berlant, he's also an actor who's appeared on screen in Promising Young Woman, The Big Sick, and Parks and Recreation.

What to Watch For

  • Kate is the latest in a comedy series from the team that produced Alison Leiby: Oh God, A Show About Abortion and Alex Edelman: Just For Us.
  • Art runs in the family! Berlant's father is Tony Berlant, a pop artist whose works are primarily made from found objects.
  • Berlant is now known for her appearances in TV shows like Search Party and The Other Two, but audiences might have also caught her years ago in Lizzie McGuire without knowing it! She had one line in a 2002 episode where she complimented Hilary Duff's pants.
  • Kate marks Berlant's return to the New York stage after 10 years. She was last seen at Webster Hall in 2012, opening for musical comedian Reggie Watts.
  • She understood the task! Berlant competed on the U.S. version of the game show Taskmaster in 2018 and won.
