“‘Hufflepuffs’ finally get their moment in HILARIOUS Potter play, ‘PUFFS’!!” declares Mashable. For seven years a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs... who just happened to be there too. A tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world.
The New York Times proclaims "Puffs," “A FAST-PACED ROMP through the ‘Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic and Magic.’ For POTTERphiliacs who grew up alongside Potter and are eager to revisit that world, ‘PUFFS’ exudes a jovial, winking fondness for all things Harry!”
This clever and inventive play “never goes more than a minute without a laugh” (Nerdist) giving you a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three potential heroes just trying to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children. Alongside them are the Puffs, a group of well-meaning, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers “who are so lovable and relatable, you’ll leave the theater wishing they were in the stories all along” (Hollywood Life). Their “hilariously heartfelt!” (Metro) and epic journey takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a boy wizard hero can be.

Hufflepuffs finally get their chance to shine in “Puffs, Or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years At A Certain School Of Magic And Magic,” the Off-Broadway Harry Potter parody. Unlike the famed Potter series by J.K. Rowling, the action does not revolve around The Boy Who Lived, his archenemy Draco Malfoy, or the intense rivalry between the houses of Gryffindor and Slytherin for that matter. The star of this story is an average Joe named Wayne Hopkins, a boy from New Mexico who was sorted into House Puff, and his faithful friends Oliver and Megan — with Potter and his pals cast aside.
References to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter abound in the one-act play by Matt Cox — set during Harry’s seven years at Hogwarts, but retold through the eyes of a much less significant student — including odes to He Who Must Not Be Named, famed Hufflepuff Quidditch captain Cedric Diggory and Potter himself.
On weekend afternoons, the show has been lightly transfigured so that wizards ages 8+ can attend, and parents can relax knowing their kids won't learn any new curses. Evening shows are appropriate for ages 13+ and include some adult language.
“Puffs” began as a six-performance run at the People’s Improv Theater in the fall of 2015 before transferring to Off-Broadway’s Elektra Theatre and later New World Stages.
“Puffs” is not only full of Harry Potter references; audiences may catch nods to “Rocky” as well.
Writer Matt Cox says he came up with the idea for “Puffs” while riding the subway and thinking, “Wouldn’t it have sucked to have been a student [in House Hufflepuff] at that school during that time?”
Although “Puffs” is written for the Potter enthusiast, not every audience member must be familiar with the Wizarding World to see the show. “Plenty of people with zero Potter knowledge have had fun with us, too,” says Cox.
