About Only Gold

From the imagination of Tony Award-winning Hamilton choreographer ANDY BLANKENBUEHLER, featuring music by British pop sensation KATE NASH and a book co-written by TED MALAWER, comes an electrifying theatrical dance musical. In Only Gold, a royal family’s arrival in Paris sets a flurry of activity into motion, forcing nobility and townsfolk alike to examine the choices they’ve made. As loyalties and loves are tested, will they find the courage to follow their hearts? Paris will never be the same.

More information about Only Gold

Escape to 1920s Paris at Only Gold, a new dance musical co-written, directed, and choreographed by three-time Tony winner Andy Blankenbuehler and with music by award-winning British musician Kate Nash. Get Only Gold tickets on TodayTix.

Only Gold is a musical about what it means, and what it costs, to follow your heart. A royal family arrives in Paris and shakes up the city as everyone — nobility, ordinary townfolk, and everyone in between — must reckon with their life choices. At the center of the story are a queen, and a princess, and a clockmaker's wife with one thing in common: The men in their lives have gone off to pursue their long-lost childhood dreams. Now, they wonder if they can break from tradition and chase their own dreams, too.

Only Gold marks the theatrical debut of Kate Nash. The singer-songwriter won the Best British Female Artist Brit Award in 2008, at age 17, upon releasing her debut album. Since then, she's put out three more albums and ventured into screen acting, starring in Netflix's GLOW and the 2022 short film Wild Bitch, which she also co-wrote and directed.

Andy Blankenbuehler is already a multihyphenate, with a decades-long career as a Broadway director and choreographer. His previous work includes Hamilton, In the Heights, and Bandstand on Broadway, all of which earned him Best Choreography Tony Awards, Bring It On: The Musical and 9 to 5, which earned him nominations.

With Only Gold, Blankenbuehler adds musical conceiver and bookwriter to his resume. However, since the show is a dance-centric musical, he's staying true to his strengths. In 2017, Dance Magazine named him among the most influential people in dance, saying, "He continually reveals dance’s ability to tell stories that matter to contemporary audiences, with movement that’s meticulously detailed yet seamlessly integrated into the show’s world. In his work, dance becomes not just important, but indispensable."

Blankenbuehler co-wrote the book for Only Gold off Broadway with Ted Malawer, best known as a screenwriter on Halston and the upcoming film adaptation of Red, White & Royal Blue.

What to Watch For

  • Only Gold is a mini-Hamilton reunion! Andy Blankenbuehler is the Tony-winning director/choreographer of that musical, and some Only Gold cast members have performed in Hamilton. Plus, Alex Lacamoire, the musical arranger for Only Gold, is Hamilton's orchestrator and music supervisor.
  • Only Gold is a dance musical, which means the dancing doesn't just add extra pizzazz, but is as equally key to the storytelling as the songs. Other famous dance musicals are Cats, A Chorus Line, An American in Paris, and MJ The Musical.
  • Blankenbuehler and Nash have been working on Only Gold since the early 2010s. The show was initially going to center on an Indian maharaja who travels to Paris in the 1920s, and feature both existing and original songs by Nash.
  • Blankenbuehler has directed and choreographed for the New York stage plenty of times before, but Only Gold marks his debut as a musical writer.
  • In addition to writing the music and lyrics, Nash also stars in Only Gold as the narrator.
