You may have seen many productions of A Christmas Carol, but Jefferson Mays puts a new spin on the classic Charles Dickens tale in this one-man version. Get A Christmas Carol tickets on TodayTix.
This A Christmas Carol play sees the Tony-winning actor perform every role in the story, large and tiny — from Ebenezer Scrooge all the way down to, according to a New York Times review, "an indignant potato." As he seamlessly shifts between roles, Mays brings fresh theatre magic to the already otherworldly tale of three ghosts — Christmas Past, Present, and Future — who visit Scrooge on Christmas Eve and convince him to change his greedy, uncaring ways.
Dickens first published A Christmas Carol in 1843, and he soon took it on "reading tours." For paying audience members, he'd voice and act out all the characters, somewhat similarly to what Mays is doing in A Christmas Carol on Broadway. With such theatrical origins, it's no wonder that in the past few centuries, A Christmas Carol has been adapted into countless full-fledged stage shows, plus movies, books, and more.
Mays premiered his version in 2018 at Los Angeles's Geffen Playhouse. The only other production of A Christmas Carol in New York, besides the 2022 Broadway production, was presented virtually in 2020 amid the pandemic. He performed the show in an empty Washington Heights theatre, where it was filmed for streaming.
