About Evanston Salt Costs Climbing

Winters keep getting worse in Evanston, IL where salt truck drivers Peter and Basil battle the ice and snow and pass the time with jokes and stories. But what's with this creeping sense of dread? Is it because their boss Maiworm has noble visions of new green technology that would make their jobs obsolete? Or is there a more terrifying warning calling out from under these roads? At least they have each other, right?

Pulitzer Prize finalist Will Arbery confronts humanity’s darkest fears with humor, warmth, and the fortitude of municipal public servants in this play about climate and change.

Directed by Danya Taymor (Heroes of the Fourth Turning by Will Arbery, "Daddy" with The New Group), Evanston Salt Costs Climbing features Quincy Tyler Bernstine (Ruined, Marys Seacole), Jeb Kreager (HBO’s Mare of Easttown, Heroes of the Fourth Turning), Ken Leung (HBO’s Industry, Lost) and Rachel Sachnoff (Evanston Salt Costs Climbing at White Heron Theatre).

In the Evanston Salt Costs Climbing play, Basil and Peter pass the time at work with stories and jokes. They're salt truck drivers, and while worsening winters mean their work is important, the advent of new technology might soon put them out of a job. But that's not the only reason they're feeling an unshakeable sense of dread — something terrifying may lurk beneath the streets where they work. Arbery's show is a story about the underestimated resilience of municipal workers in the face of change.

Arbery is best known for Heroes of the Fourth Turning, his play about young conservatives in Wyoming that earned him a Pulitzer Prize nomination, along with Lucille Lortel, Obie, and Outer Critics Circle Award wins. He is also the playwright of Plano and Corsicana, which premiered off Broadway earlier in 2022, starring Tony Award winner Deirdre O'Connell.

Directing Evanston Salt Costs Climbing in New York is Danya Taymor, whose past Off-Broadway credits include queens, Gloria, and Grounded. She also directed Pass Over off Broadway in 2018 and made her Broadway directing debut with the show in 2021; it was the first new show to reopen on Broadway post-pandemic.

What to Watch For

  • Evanston Salt Costs Climbing isn't the first collaboration between Taymor and Arbery. She previously directed Heroes of the Fourth Turning off Broadway in 2019.
  • This also isn't Taymor's first time working with The New Group. She previously directed "Daddy", by Tony-nominated playwright Jeremy O. Harris, for the theatre company.
  • It runs in the family: Danya Taymor's aunt is Julie Taymor, the multi-award-winning director of The Lion King on Broadway.
  • Arbery's plays center on ordinary types of characters in rural areas of the country.
  • Specifically, Arbery usually sets his plays in Wyoming or Texas, the states he was raised in. Evanston Salt Costs Climbing is an outlier, being set in Illinois.
