About Everything's Fine

Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner John Lithgow returns to the director’s chair after four decades for the one-man show from Academy Award nominee Douglas McGrath. The autobiographical play performed by McGrath recounts the actor and writer’s and director’s life, starting at the age of 14 in Midland, Texas, and detailing his memories for what Lithgow described as “a high-wire act of a play that alternately delights and blindsides you with emotion.”

More information about Everything's Fine

John Lithgow directs Everything's Fine, the new one-man memoir written and performed by Douglas McGrath. Get Everything's Fine tickets on TodayTix.

Everything's Fine is a play in which McGrath shares his life story, beginning when he was in eighth grade. Then, a teacher at his Texas middle school changed his life, and he recounts how his whole future life was shaped from that point.

McGrath is the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of the movie Bullets Over Broadway, which was later adapted into a Broadway musical. He's a multi-hyphenate, though, as he also directs and acts for both stage and screen. McGrath wrote and directed the 1996 film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma; wrote for 12 episodes of Saturday Night Live, and wrote the book for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical on Broadway.

Lithgow is best known as an actor, having earned two Tony Awards, six Emmys, two Golden Globes, and Oscar and Grammy nominations for his work. On screen, Lithgow is best known for 3rd Rock from the Sun, Dexter, Footloose, The Pelican Brief, and Terms of Endearment. He has also acted in 24 Broadway shows, winning Tonys for The Changing Room and Sweet Smell of Success, and directed one, 1975's Boy Meets Girl. Now, he returns to the director's chair for Everything's Fine off Broadway.

What to Watch For

  • In addition to writing for screen and stage, McGrath is also known for his writing in the New Yorker magazine.
  • Boy Meets Girl is the only stage show Lithgow has directed, so Everything's Fine marks his return to directing after more than 45 years.
  • In the show, McGrath references multiple famous people his mother knew, like Andy Warhol and Diana Vreeland. Little did he know he'd eventually become famous himself!
