More information about Anthony Rapp’s Without You
Jonathan Larson's musical went on to win Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, but he never got to see it — Larson died the morning of the show's first performance, and the Off-Broadway premiere became a tribute. During this time, Rapp and his mother had a rocky relationship, and Rapp shares all these stories and more in Without You off Broadway.
He first published his story as a memoir of the same name in 2006, 10 years after Rent premiered. He turned the book into the Without You show in 2012. Rapp has performed it across the country and in the U.K., but this is the first performance of Without You in New York.
Rapp has also appeared in stage shows like You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Six Degrees of Separation.
What to Watch For
- Keep your ears out for one song that's neither from Rent nor Rapp, but from R.E.M. Rapp auditioned for Rent with "Losing My Religion," and it kicks off Without You.
- Without You is technically a solo show, but a five-piece band accompanies Rapp on stage.
- Rapp's last Broadway outing was in the musical If/Then. He starred alongside his Rent co-star Idina Menzel!
- Besides being a stage actor, Rapp has also appeared on screen in Star Trek: Discovery, The X-Files, Law & Order: SVU, and of course, the Rent movie. He is one of six Broadway cast members who reprised their roles in the film.
- Theatre runs in the family! Rapp’s brother is Adam Rapp, who wrote the Tony-nominated play The Sound Inside and the Pulitzer-nominated play Red Light Winter.
