Lightscape began on the other side of the pond — at London's Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in 2014. Since then, the phenomenon has spread to botanical gardens in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Fort Worth. Lightscape first came to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in 2021, and it's now a seasonal staple. The joy and wonder of light artistry is universal, making Lightscape a great option no matter what holiday you celebrate this time of year.
What to watch for
- One light installation, Kaleido Circle, will be set to the rhythm of a playlist featuring influential Brooklyn hip-hop artists, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. Queens-based artist Sherwin Banfield curated the playlist.
- In addition to snacks, the seasonal drinks on offer include hot chocolate, mulled wine, and cider (spiked and not). Most of the vendors are cashless, so be sure to bring a credit card or phone for digital payment.
- A variety of artists created the light installations featured in Lightscape.
- Lightscape happens rain or shine, so dress accordingly for the weather — and the cold!
