Tony Award winner Adrienne Warren (Tina: The Tina Turner Musical) returns to the Broadway stage for a limited engagement in a gripping new drama. Room tickets will be available on TodayTix soon. Set an alert for Room Broadway tickets.

First a bestselling novel and then an Oscar-winning film starring Brie Larson, Room is now a critically acclaimed play with music. A "moving work about the power of imagination and the pain of adjustment to a new reality," as The Guardian raved, this "ingeniously staged" production now moves stateside with a celebrated Broadway star. Don't miss her performance as Ma, a kidnapping victim whose resilience is tested upon reentering the outside world with her young son after seven years in a single room.

Emma Donoghue's original Room novel, published in 2010, was an immediate critical hit, becoming a finalist for multiple literary awards including the Booker Prize. A 2015 film adaptation followed and received its own wealth of acclaim. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, the Room movie was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Larson won Best Actress for her performance as Ma.

The Room play premiered in 2017 in London, England, and later went up in Glasgow, Dublin, Toronto, and London, Ontario. Cora Bissett directed all the show's productions, including Room in New York. She also co-wrote the songs with fellow Scottish musician Kathryn Joseph.

Warren did not play Ma in previous productions, but she's a celebrated actress on both sides of the Atlantic. She is best known for originating the role of Tina Turner in her eponymous musical, first in London in 2018 (earning an Olivier Award nomination) and on Broadway in 2019 (winning the Best Leading Actress Tony Award).

Warren's other best-known credits include Shuffle Along (Tony nomination) and Bring It On on stage, and The Woman King and Women of the Movement on screen.

While harrowing, Room celebrates the "triumph of the human spirit" and is "as fulfilling and rich an experience as the original read" (London Free Press). Step into Room this season, and set an alert for tickets now.

What to Watch For

  • Emma Donoghue wrote every iteration of Room, having adapted her novel into the film's Oscar-nominated screenplay and the play's script.
  • The Room novel, film, and play are all told from Jack's perspective. In the play, an older actor plays his imaginary alter ego, Super Jack, and his drawings are projected onto the set.
  • Bissett suggested that Donoghue adapt Room for the stage. To her, the way Ma uses songs and stories to cope, and create a new and comforting reality for her son, was inherently theatrical.
  • Room is based in part on the real-life Fritzl case of 2008, in which a woman had children while held in captivity for years.
  • Warren is known for her performances in musicals, but Room marks her Broadway play debut.
  • Two Booker Prize honorees hit Broadway this season. A stage adaptation of Yann Martel's Life of Pi, which won the award in 2002, is also on stage in spring 2023.
