More information about The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show

Carle published The Very Hungry Caterpillar book in 1969. The story has since won multiple awards for writing and illustration, including the American Institute of Graphic Arts Award, and sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. In one simple story, Carle teaches lessons about the caterpillar life cycle, days of the week, counting, and types of food, all of which also shine through in the stage show, too.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar premiered in Australia in 2015 before coming to New York in 2016 and 2018. Rockefeller Productions, the company that created the show, is also behind children’s shows like Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Adaptation and Sesame Street: The Musical, both of which featured Rockefeller’s trademark puppetry and received critical acclaim.

What to Watch For

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show actually incorporates four Eric Carle tales. The other three are 10 Little Rubber Ducks, The Very Lonely Firefly, and Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
  • Carle is known for his unique collage-style illustrations made from hand-painted paper. The puppets in The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show are designed to mimic Carle's style.
  • A total of 75 puppets appear in The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show off Broadway.
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar was one of Carle's first books as both author and illustrator. He published that story the same year as 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo.
  • The New York Public Library named The Very Hungry Caterpillar book one of the top 20 most checked-out books of all time in a 2020 report. If you've ever checked out the book, go check it out on stage next!
