More information about Grey House on Broadway starring Laurie Metcalf

We’ve been expecting you.

When a couple crashes their car in the mountains, they seek shelter in an isolated cabin. Its inhabitants, though somewhat unusual, are eager to make their guests feel right at home. But as the blizzard outside rages on and one night turns into several, the couple becomes less and less sure of what's true—about their hosts, themselves, and why that sound in the walls keeps getting louder.

Directing is Joe Mantello, who won Tonys for staging Take Me Out and Assassins. He’s best known for directing Wicked and The Humans, but he’s also an actor, and a horror veteran at that. He just starred as Gino in American Horror Story: NYC.

Leading his cast is Laurie Metcalf, who’s best known for her Emmy-winning role as Jackie Harris on Roseanne and its spinoff, The Conners. She most recently won an Emmy for a guest role on Hacks and got an Oscar nomination for her role as Marion McPherson in Lady Bird. Grey House marks the continuation of an equally storied stage career: She’s won Tonys for A Doll's House, Part 2 and Three Tall Women, and has been nominated for four other shows, including Hillary and Clinton.

What to Watch For

  • Playwright Levi Holloway makes his Broadway debut with Grey House.
  • With Grey House on Broadway, Mantello and Metcalf reunite after he directed her in Three Tall Women in 2018 and Hillary and Clinton in 2019. In addition to Metcalf’s acting win for Three Tall Women, Mantello got a Tony nomination for directing.
  • In 2016, Metcalf starred in Misery, a play with a similar premise to Grey House. She earned a Tony nomination for playing an obsessive woman who holds a famous author captive in her home. (In Grey House, a character notes the parallel as he approaches the remote cabin.)
  • In fact, the whole cast are no strangers to the scary. Beetlejuice star Sophia Anne Caruso is in Grey House alongside Millicent Simmonds, best known for starring in the horror film A Quiet Place.
  • Multiple Broadway thrillers feature scary themes (like the murderous Macbeth and Sweeney Todd) or marry the spooky with the comic (like Beetlejuice and Little Shop of Horrors), but Grey House is the rare play to lean fully into the thrills.
