More information about Here We Are
The Here We Are musical is inspired by two films by Luis Buñuel: The Exterminating Angel (1962), about upper-class guests trapped at their own dinner party, and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), about a group of six friends whose dinner party plans keep getting derailed. Both are surrealist works that satirize aristocrats who hide dark secrets behind glamorous facades.
Buñuel, a Spanish Mexican director, has been called one of the most influential filmmakers in history, remembered for pioneering surrealism in film and delivering shocking, moving narratives.
It's only fitting that his films are adapted by one of the most influential composers in history: Sondheim, known for his layered and emotional storytelling through lyrics and music. Also on board is bookwriter David Ives, who adapted Buñuel's screenplays for the stage. Ives, too, is a playwriting great; his one-act comedies earned him the nickname "maestro of the short form."
What to watch for
- A previous working title for Here We Are was Square One. Nathan Lane and Bernadette Peters were involved in early workshops of the musical back when it had that name.
- Denis O'Hare is the only Here We Are cast member who's performed in a Sondheim musical on Broadway; he starred in Assassins in 2004.
- David Hyde Pierce also has a history with Sondheim: He hosted the composer's 80th birthday concert.
- The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Buñuel received five lifetime Oscar nominations along with many other awards from prestigious film festivals in places like Cannes and Venice, including the Career Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
- Sondheim received nine Tony Awards in his lifetime, including one for lifetime achievement, alongside a Pulitzer Prize for Sunday in the Park With George.
