About Home on Broadway

Come home to Broadway for the first revival of Home, the Tony Award nominee for Best Play by Samm-Art Williams. Experience a tender, poetic coming-of-age story featuring three actors "deliver[ing] astronomical performances" (New Amsterdam News) as 40 characters — get Home tickets on TodayTix.

“Welcome back, Home. You’ve been missed!” Time Out raves. Go on a journey with Cephus Miles, a man looking for someplace — or someone — new to call home after his sweetheart leaves for college and marries another man. His quest for belonging brings him from the rural South to the urban North and back, where he experiences love, vice, faith, war, confinement, and more as he tries to put down new roots in an ever-shifting world.

Director Kenny Leon returns to stage Home at the Todd Haimes Theatre after winning a Tony for his production of A Soldier's Play there. You can find a home there, too, when you get tickets to Home on Broadway.

See it if You are interested in a story about overcoming obstacles. It was very confusing and hard to follow. The acting was fine.

Don’t see it if You want a clear and structured story.

Absorbing, Ambitious, Clever, Delightful, Exquisite

See it if I love the way the acting was portrayed and how he dealt with his obstacle's. Though depressing at times it was still amazing.

Don’t see it if there wasn't anything I didn't dislike, though faced with challenges he persevered.

Fast Dialogue, Great Acting, Historical, Poetic, Thought-Provoking

See it if you enjoy taking a look at a moment in history, see how a particular population have been influenced by the times. You enjoy literature.

Don’t see it if You get frustrated trying to catch every word of a rapid fire monologue or dialogue. The second half of the show is easier to understand.

More information about Home on Broadway

Home premiered in 1979 with the Negro Theatre Company and made its Broadway debut a year later. The production ran for eight months and earned two Tony nominations: Best Play and Best Actor in a Play for Charles Brown as Cephus.

The Theatre at Riverside Church in Morningside Heights hosted a revival in 1997, and Signature Theatre in 2008, but Home is rarely performed in New York — making this major revival a must-see.

The 2024 revival of Home in New York is presented by Roundabout Theatre Company, which owns and operates the American Airlines Theatre as well as the Off-Broadway Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre.

What to watch for

  • Playwright Samm-Art Williams is multi-talented. Before writing Home, he performed in a 1975 Broadway play called The First Breeze of Summer.
  • Williams also has screenwriting experience, having edited and written scripts for shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Martin.
  • Kenny Leon knows how to stage a revival. He won a Tony for his production of A Soldier's Play (which also won Best Revival of a Play in 2020), and his production of Topdog/Underdog also won Best Revival of a Play in 2023. His Ohio State Murders and Purlie Victorious also earned critical acclaim.
  • The director of Home's original Broadway production, Douglas Turner Ward, co-founded the Negro Theatre Company.
