In Shakespeare’s beloved comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost, the King of Navarre and his three lords, Berowne, Longaville, and Dumaine, swear an intense oath to scholarship, vowing to fast and avoid eye contact with all women for three years. Fate has other plans: the Princess of France is en route to the king for a meeting, bring three maidens in tow, which proves difficult given the young men’s shared vow. Director Amanda Dehnert updates Shakespeare’s classic, electrifying it by setting the love story to an original pop and rock score (by Dehnert and Andre Pleuss) to give full voice to the irresistible feeling of falling in love. Love’s Labour’s Lost is a timeless tale of friendship, youth, and the first throes of love, making it a perfect summer romance.
No girls, all books: in Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost, four young noblemen abstain from society in order to focus on their academics, taking an oath to only pursue scholarly ideals, not romantic ones. The study buddies quickly find that promise difficult to uphold when the princess of France shows up with three of her young, female, and conveniently unwed friends. What could go wrong?
As the young men attempt to stave off temptation and keep to their studies, romance has other plans as love sneaks in and cares are tossed away. Mania ensues as the men find creative ways to avoid contact with the women, but one by one, they each fall for one of the four women. As they all confess their love, the story builds to a bittersweet conclusion.
