More information about Bees & Honey

This new Off-Broadway play by Guadalís Del Carmen is both sweet as honey and stinging with poignancy. Get Bees and Honey tickets on TodayTix to watch a bittersweet love story unfold.

The Bees and Honey play is about Manuel and Johaira, whose lives have changed a lot since they first met at a Washington Heights club. Now married and both about to advance their careers, Manuel and Johaira must let go of their once-carefree life. As life's challenges build even more, with Manuel's mother falling ill and a sudden tragedy striking, the pair's relationship is put to the test every day. Is love enough to keep their marriage alive?

Bees and Honey premiered in 2018 at SOLFest, a festival that showcases new work by Latin American playwrights. That event is put on by the Sol Project, the theatre company co-producing Bees and Honey alongside MCC Theater. Sol, like its festival, is dedicated to producing work by Latin Americans.

Del Carmen also founded another incubator for Latin American writers: Latinx Playwrights Circle NYC. Her other plays include Daughters of the Rebellion, Not For Sale, My Father’s Keeper.

What to Watch For

  • Bees and Honey is based on "Como Abeja Al Panal," a song by Juan Luis Guerra. The title translates as "like a bee to the honeycomb."
  • The song has a slightly different story than the Bees and Honey play, though. The song is about forbidden lovers who can't help but be attracted to each other.
  • Crespo co-founded 3Views on Theater, a theatre criticism website that publishes three reviews of each show to support diverse perspectives.
  • Both Del Carmen and Crespo make their Off-Broadway debuts, respectively as a writer and director, with Bees and Honey.
