About Teeth

It’s a coming-of-rage musical like no other: See Teeth off Broadway, playing at New World Stages this fall after a hit world premiere at Playwrights Horizons. From Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Michael R. Jackson (A Strange Loop) and Anna K. Jacobs (POP!), Teeth is a fierce, rapturous, and savagely entertaining new musical crackling with irrepressible desire and ancient rage. Get Teeth tickets on TodayTix.

This bracing and hysterical musical is an adaptation of the cult 2007 film written and directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein. In the show, Dawn O’Keefe is an evangelical Christian teen with a powerful secret not even she understands: When men violate her, her body bites back. Literally.

Don’t miss this thrillingly dark show that conjures the legend of one girl whose sexual curse is also her salvation. Directed by Drama Desk and Obie award winner Sarah Benson, Teeth is a musical comedy with a bite.

More information about Teeth

In Teeth off Broadway, Dawn is part of the Promise Keeper Girls, a religious group devoted to sexual purity. When she unexpectedly discovers her body's curse — or is it a superpower? — she's initially repulsed, then confused, then, just maybe, empowered. Dawn's journey of self- and sexual discovery collides with her stepbrother's exploration of his own masculinity, her pastor stepfather's fire-and-brimstone preaching, and more in this sharp roller coaster of a show.

Playwrights Horizons is a launchpad for new, great American musicals like A Strange Loop and Assassins. Teeth, which debuted there in spring 2024 before going to New World Stages, is the latest example.

What to watch for

  • Teeth is part of a long line of successful musicals to have debuted at Playwrights Horizons, many of which have won Tony Awards and Pulitzer Prizes: Sunday in the Park With George, The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin, Floyd Collins, Violet, Iowa, and Bella: An American Tall Tale.
  • Teeth brings Michael R. Jackson back to Playwrights Horizons. He won a Pulitzer Prize for his meta-musical A Strange Loop, which premiered at Playwrights Horizons before transferring to Broadway and winning Jackson the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical.
  • Playwrights Horizons recommends Teeth for ages 17 and up due to "intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content, and strong language." The show handles it all in a dark but campy manner.
  • Celebrated as “robustly intelligent, unflinchingly honest, dizzyingly screwball, and a sheer delight,” Anna K. Jacobs and Michael R. Jackson’s biting musical comedy won a Whiting Award. The Whiting Foundation has supported creative writing since 1985.
