More information about Mother Play on Broadway

Mother Play takes place in 1962 on the outskirts of D.C., where matriarch Phyllis (Lange) and her teenage children, Carl (Parsons) and Martha (Keenan-Bolger), move into a new apartment. She has very strict ideas of who and what they must be, and woe be them if they stray. But as they unpack their past and face the future, they cope with the changes happening among themselves.

With Mother Play, Vogel returns to Broadway for the third time in a short seven years. She made her debut in 2017 with Indecent (a Tony nominee for Best Play) and followed it up in 2022 with How I Learned to Drive, the long-awaited Broadway premiere of her Pulitzer-winning 1997 masterwork. That production was a Best Play Revival Tony nominee.

Vogel and director Tina Landau's three lead actors in Mother Play are all stage and screen stars. Lange has two Oscars and three Emmys for Tootsie, Blue Sky, Grey Gardens, and American Horror Story. Parsons is best known for starring as Sheldon Cooper on the record-breaking sitcom The Big Bang Theory, and Keenan-Bolger has appeared in TV shows like The Gilded Age, Bull, and The Good Wife amid her four-time Tony-nominated Broadway career.

What to watch for

  • Paula Vogel is an inductee into the American Theatre Hall of Fame, the recipient of numerous New York theatre awards, and the namesake of two playwriting awards. In other words: When it comes to playwriting, Paula Vogel is mother.
  • Mother Play is produced on Broadway by Second Stage Theater, a nonprofit theatre company dedicated to work by living American playwrights.
  • Lange has range! All of Lange's previous Broadway performances have been in classic play revivals; Mother Play is her first time leading a new show on Broadway.
  • Lange and Keenan-Bolger have both starred in The Glass Menagerie on Broadway: Lange in 2005 and Keenan-Bolger in 2013. Lange's production also starred Sarah Paulson, who returns to Broadway in Second Stage's Appropriate just a few months before Mother Play starts up.
  • Keenan-Bolger is a Second Stage regular. She's performed in four other shows there: A Parallelogram, Bachelorette, Little Fish, and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, for which she later earned a Tony nomination.
