Russian Troll Farm: A Workplace Comedy is a play about the daily routines of professional trolls, who cook up online personas, conflicts, and conspiracies. Of course, there’s interpersonal drama, too – Steve likes Masha, Masha likes Nikolai, and Egor? He just wants to win a microwave. They’re just like you!
But what happens to your grasp of the truth when your whole job is lying? How does your identity change when you adopt an American persona professionally? And what happens when you can’t decide where to order lunch? All this and more is under the microscope in Russian Troll Farm.
The real-life Internet Research Agency in Russia, on which Russian Troll Farm is based, is best known for sowing dissent in the U.S.’s 2016 election. The agency actually predates the election by three years and continued working on U.S. elections after 2016. The agency also served interests closer to home, attempting to bolster support for Vladimir Putin and criticizing Ukraine. Following intense scrutiny and even U.S. indictments, the agency closed in July 2023.
