More information about Russian Troll Farm: A Workplace Comedy

Russian Troll Farm: A Workplace Comedy is a play about the daily routines of professional trolls, who cook up online personas, conflicts, and conspiracies. Of course, there’s interpersonal drama, too – Steve likes Masha, Masha likes Nikolai, and Egor? He just wants to win a microwave. They’re just like you!

But what happens to your grasp of the truth when your whole job is lying? How does your identity change when you adopt an American persona professionally? And what happens when you can’t decide where to order lunch? All this and more is under the microscope in Russian Troll Farm.

The real-life Internet Research Agency in Russia, on which Russian Troll Farm is based, is best known for sowing dissent in the U.S.’s 2016 election. The agency actually predates the election by three years and continued working on U.S. elections after 2016. The agency also served interests closer to home, attempting to bolster support for Vladimir Putin and criticizing Ukraine. Following intense scrutiny and even U.S. indictments, the agency closed in July 2023.

What to watch for

  • Russian Troll Farm’s digital premiere won a special Obie Award in the new category of “Digital+Virtual+Hybrid Production,” and The New York Times listed it as one of the 10 best productions of 2020.
  • The Broadway Women’s Fund named Playwright Sarah Gancher one of its Women to Watch on Broadway in 2022. Among The Fund's leadership and advisory board are Tony winners Chita Rivera and Rachel Chavkin.
  • Check your local listings: Gancher is currently developing Russian Troll Farm for television as a half-hour animated sitcom in the vein of Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons. Keep an eye out for more news — but make sure it’s all true!
  • Director Darko Tresnjak is no stranger to plays set in Russia. He previously directed the Broadway premiere of Anastasia, based on the 1997 animated movie musical.
