About Daphne

In the woods, it's hard to tell what's real and what isn't. So find out for yourself at Daphne, a world-premiere play by Renae Simone Jarrett at Lincoln Center Theater. Get Daphne tickets on TodayTix.

The title character begins to question her own reality when she moves from the city to the woods to live with her girlfriend, Winona. But when a series of unsettling incidents take place as their relationship goes downhill, and Daphne must confront that truth rather than staying in denial, her body starts to transform.

Presented in the intimate Claire Tow Theater, Daphne promises to be a thrilling, thought-provoking experience from every seat. Get tickets to Daphne off Broadway.

More information about Daphne

Jarrett makes her Off-Broadway debut with Daphne in New York just two years after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with an M.F.A. in playwriting. For this production, she teams up with director Sarah Hughes, who specializes in new, devised, and radically adapted work. Hughes is also the founder of a development program for new plays, the Kitchen Sink Residency, and a former member of award-winning experimental theatre company Elevator Repair Service.

The cast of Daphne includes Jasmine Batchelor, Denise Burse, Naomi Lorrain, Keilly McQuail, and Jeena Yi.

What to watch for

  • Daphne is loosely inspired by the Greek myth about Daphne, a dryad who turned into a laurel tree to avoid the god Apollo, who relentlessly pursued her.
  • Daphne is a production of LCT3, Lincoln Center Theater's program that presents new works by up-and-coming playwrights.
  • The walls and floor of Maruti Evans's set are covered in an intricate leaf pattern, blurring the line between the outdoors and indoors.
  • Three out of the five cast members of Daphne are making their Lincoln Center Theater debuts.
  • Hughes is also set to direct a new play by Julia May Jonas, whose play Your Own Personal Exegesis premiered with LCT3 in winter 2022.
