Joe Tapper, last seen on Broadway in You Can't Take It With You, reprises his leading role as Steven from the 2019 production. Director Sheryl Kaller is also no stranger to Broadway, having directed two Broadway productions – Mothers and Sons and Next Fall, for which she earned a Tony nomination.

Playwright Sean Daniels based the main character on his own struggles with alcoholism. Steven, amid his flourishing career, frequently gets day drunk on vodka that he mixes into bottles of soda. He still succeeds at his job at first, but Steven’s life soon deteriorates. When his father is diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Steven uses the shock as a further excuse to drink and distance himself from his parents. The play explores how a man far gone can still find a way out against all odds.

What to watch for

  • The play’s name comes from the Alcoholics Anonymous sobriety-chip system. The white chip is given to anyone new or returning to A.A. who wants to give sobriety a chance for 24 hours. It is symbolic of the first step towards recovery.
  • John Larroquette, Hank Azaria, and Sweeney Todd star Annaleigh Ashford are among the many producers of The White Chip in New York.
  • Talk about showmance! Tapper and Ashford both starred together in Broadway’s You Can't Take It With You and have been married since 2013.
  • Daniels leads the Recovery Project, a producer of The White Chip, at Florida Studio Theatre. The initiative seeks to remove the stigma of addiction and recovery through new play development, theatre education programs, and community outreach.
