More information about A Sign of the Times

In 1965, America was in a state of flux. The Vietnam War raged, civil rights and women's liberation movements gained momentum, and New York City was a hub for change. Amid these changing times, a young, ambitious woman named Cindy arrives in the city, eager to navigate the shifting landscape. A Sign of the Times immerses audiences in the '60s through her eyes, chronicling Cindy's journey as a budding photographer capturing history as it happens.

Chilina Kennedy stars as Cindy alongside Crystal Lucas-Perry as Tanya and two-time Drama Desk nominee Ryan Silverman (The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago) as Brian in this show with a book by Lindsey Hope Pearlman, based on Richard J. Robin's original story. Under the direction of Gabriel Barre, the production promises a nostalgic trip back to an unforgettable decade.

What to watch for

  • A Sign of the Times previously had successful runs at Connecticut’s Norma Terris Theatre in 2016 and the Delaware Theatre Company in 2018, selling out its entire run.
  • Kennedy, no stranger to jukebox musicals, also has experience with this show’s time period. Beautiful: The Carole King Musical chronicled the title singer’s career from 1958 onward.
  • Petula Clark and Lesley Gore, whose songs are featured in the show, each appeared in musicals themselves. Gore appeared as a guest performer in Broadway’s Smokey Joe’s Cafe, while Clark stepped into the cast of the 1993 Broadway musical Blood Brothers in the middle of its run.
  • Bookwriter Pearlman makes her Off-Broadway debut with A Sign of the Times, but she has experience working with Broadway performers — in 2017, she assistant directed the musical Bandstand.
