About Dead Outlaw

Buckle up and come along for a ride wilder than any amusement park attraction. The new musical Dead Outlaw, from the celebrated creative team behind the multi-Tony-winning The Band's Visit, digs into the unbelievable true story of a man who had twice as many adventures in death as in life.

Dead Outlaw begins with the wild question: How did the preserved body of an Old West train robber from Oklahoma end up hanging in a Southern California amusement park ride in 1976? As we find out, we discover the long, strange odyssey of outlaw Elmer McCurdy's life, which spanned a continent and a century. Composers Erik Della Penna and David Yazbek, playwright Itamar Moses, and director David Cromer to create the first new musical at Audible Theater.

Don't miss your chance to catch this strictly limited world premiere. Just like McCurdy himself, some legends are dying to be told. Get tickets to Dead Outlaw off Broadway before it gallops out of town.

Ambitious, Delightful, Entertaining, Great Writing, Hilarious

See it if you love a story so absurd, it must be true - told with zany humor, a toe-tapping score, and great performances!

Don’t see it if you are a literal stick in actual mud and therefore cannot purchase a ticket.

More information about Dead Outlaw

Born in 1880, Elmer McCurdy was an American outlaw killed in a shoot-out with police after robbing a train in 1911. Now infamously known as The Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up, his mummified body was first displayed at an Oklahoma funeral home, and it then became a fixture on the traveling carnival and sideshow circuit from the 1920-60s.

After changing ownership several times, McCurdy’s remains eventually wound up at The Pike amusement zone in Long Beach, California, where they were discovered by TV crew members. Sounds bizarre? It is, and there’s so much more to the not-so-tall tale, all set to music by Grammy Award-winning composer Yazbek.

The Band's Visit, Yazbek's first collaboration with Moses and Cromer, won 10 Tony Awards in 2018, including Best Musical. Now, Dead Outlaw in New York premieres with Audible Theater, the theatrical arm of the podcast/audiobook giant.

What to watch for

  • In addition to its live programming at the Minetta Lane Theatre, Audible Theater presents all genres of audio plays. All live Audible Theater productions are also recorded and later released as audio dramas.
  • Tony Award-winning director David Cromer has staged multiple critically acclaimed shows including Prayer for the French Republic, The Sound Inside, The House of Blue Leaves, The Treasurer, Our Town, and more. He was also a 2010 MacArthur Fellow.
  • The musical’s subject, Elmer McCurdy, had a lifetime of adventures — and crime. After training in the U.S. Army, McCurdy incorporated his knowledge of nitroglycerin, used for demolition purposes, into his bank and train robberies. However, he often used the wrong amount and botched his theft attempts.
  • David Yazbek is known for his soulful and witty scores, seen in Broadway and Off-Broadway productions including The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Tootsie, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
