The Connector musical’s composer Jason Robert Brown is no stranger to hard-hitting, historical musicals. His Tony Award-winning hit Parade, about the trial, imprisonment, and lynching of Jewish American Leo Frank in the 1910s, won two 1998 Tony Awards (including Best Original Score for Brown) and later won Best Revival of a Musical in 2023.
Born and raised in suburban New York, Brown first rose to prominence with the premiere of his song cycle Songs for a New World, and after his aforementioned Broadway debut, one of his later Off-Broadway ventures – 2002’s The Last Five Years – became something of a cult classic in the theatre world, inspiring numerous regional productions and even a Hollywood film, starring Jeremy Jordan and Anna Kendrick.
In 2008, Brown’s musical 13 debuted on Broadway, with a young cast of future stars Ariana Grande, Graham Phillips, and Elizabeth Gillies. This musical was also adapted into a feature film for Netflix in 2022.
