About August Wilson's Fences

Set in the 1950s, this Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play is the 6th play in Wilson's monumental, ten-part 'Pittsburgh Cycle.' Troy Maxson, an African American garbage collector and ex-convict once had a promising career in baseball, but Troy's bitterness takes its toll on his relationships with his wife and his son, who now wants his own chance to play ball. Fences brings to life the struggles of everyday black Americans.

Absorbing, Great Acting, Great Writing, Profound, Slow

See it if Wilson's father-son conflict drama w/its elements of Greek tragedy gets a solid production at GP Impressive set supports impressive acting

Don’t see it if Wilson's quasi-religious, meta-theatrics are at a minimum here w/director Seraphin keeping a tight focus on the familial cries & whispers

Great Acting, Great Writing, Intense, Relevant, Resonant

See it if You enjoy deep stories about the Black experience in America. You enjoy family dramas where people's demons color their lives.

Don’t see it if You want a musical, or the core theme of a Black family trying to make their way through the 1960's does not resonate with you.

See it if you want to see an excellent presentation of an epic play. Top notch acting at a small, Brooklyn venue. Very enjoyable.

Don’t see it if if you don't like Brooklyn or small neighborhood theaters.
