More information about Grangeville

Few writers have given as much attention to the myth and reality of the American West as Samuel D. Hunter. Acclaimed for his dialogue rooted in naturalism and his gritty characters rich in heart, his plays offer a glimpse into the inner lives of Americans less frequently seen on stage. Sharing the complex shades of masculinity, depictions of rural queerness, and the economic realities of dreamers working for major corporations that have reinvented but not revitalized small towns in Idaho and beyond, his body of work has garnered great acclaim and earned the writer Obie and Drama Desk Awards. He's also, perhaps most notably, a MacArthur "Genius" grant recipient.

Now, in his latest play, Hunter charts the thorny relationship between two half-brothers coming together, after years and oceans apart, to care for their sickly mother. Audiences can expect an intimate drama with well-drawn characters played by some of today's biggest talents.

What to watch for

  • Brendan Fraser has appeared off Broadway before, but this will be his first time back in years, and Samuel D. Hunter's first new show since they worked together on The Whale.
  • The Whale also elevated the profile of Hong Chau, who earned an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
  • Brian J. Smith, like Fraser, also has a film and TV background, appearing in Sense8. Now, the two return to the stage.
  • Jack Serio has directed other theatre stars, including David Cromer and David Greenspan, before coming to Signature to make his debut at that venue.
