Exes are complicated. Exes are terrible. Exes are…maybe the love of our life? It can be hard to tell, especially when enough time has passed since we last speak to these formative people in our lives. Douglas Lyons, who always writes with a sharp pen, a keen eye, and an open heart, understands that relationships are often more complicated than they seem, and he brings that nuance front and center without sacrificing laughs in his new rom com, Table 17.
An exploration of one couple’s uncoupling — and potential recoupling — Table 17 is an MCC world premiere and an exciting new step for Lyons and Zhailon Levingston following their hilarious triumph, Chicken & Biscuits. After that riotous play, food remains at the center of this new work, staged over the course of a dinner, but audiences will note this is a more intimate production, with only three actors telling a simple and timeless tale.
What to watch for
- Jason Sherwood, an Emmy Award winner for Rent Live on Fox, is the starry scenic designer for this show and will create a casual but fraught ambiance where an old pair’s meetup can take place.
- In addition to Kara Young and Biko Eisen-Martin, Michael Rishawn (Broadway’s Ain't No Mo') fills in the third role playing waiters and other parts.
- Zhailon Levingston is more than a director; he is also a board member for the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, which received an honorary Tony Award in 2021.
- Douglas Lyons earned a GLAAD nomination for his Broadway playwriting debut, Chicken & Biscuits, which was the second most produced play in America in 2022-23. He is also an actor, having appeared Beautiful and Parade on Broadway.
