About Hold Me in the Water

See the newest solo play from Ryan J. Haddad, author of the acclaimed and award-winning Dark Disabled Stories. A new play about the soaring heights and deep vulnerabilities that come with first love, Hold Me in the Water plays for a limited run this spring at Playwright Horizons’ Judy Theater.

Danny Sharon directs Hold Me in the Water in New York, a world premiere from Haddad who has won the Drama Desk’s 2023 Sam Norkin Off-Broadway Award, Vineyard Theatre’s 2021 Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, and a 2020 Disability Futures Fellowship. More information about Hold Me in the Water

In Hold Me in the Water, Ryan traces an episode of first love: he falls for a man he’s just met and is ready for their connection to grow but is less prepared for how new heights of joy can also bring deep insecurities to the surface. Vulnerable without sacrificing its sexiness, provocations, and deep honesty, Hold Me in the Water offers a universal experience through a specific lens, blending great humor and insightful intimacy.

“Haddad is an actor and writer of extraordinary charm,” The New York Times wrote. “Disarmingly witty and immensely likable, he will make you laugh.” Celebrated for how he uses difficult topics as a vehicle for humor, Haddad is never shy and is always refreshingly open.

Audiences can expect, in his new play, a similar sense of transparency, candor, and nuanced humor and storytelling. Fans of his last work, Dark Disabled Stories, will recognize this play’s exploration of disability and connection.
