About The Blood Quilt

In this eloquent and moving family story by Pulitzer Prize winner Katori Hall (The Hot Wing King, The Mountaintop), four sisters gather at their childhood island home off the coast of Georgia for their annual reunion. They are creating a family quilt to honor their recently deceased mother. But when their reunion turns into a reading of their mother’s will, everyone must grapple with a troubling inheritance. Stitched with history, ritual, laughter and tears, will their “blood quilt” bind the family together or tear them apart forever?

Directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz (White Girl in Danger, Pipeline) and featuring Lauren E. Banks (Lawmen: Bass Reeves) Crystal Dickinson (Clybourne Park, Broke-ology), Mirirai (School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play), Adrienne C. Moore (Orange is the New Black), and Susan Kelechi Watson (This is Us). Additional casting to be announced.

More information about The Blood Quilt

In this new play, four sisters return to their childhood home on a little island off the coast of Georgia. There, they reunite under less than ideal circumstances: separated for years, they come together to grieve their deceased mother. Together, they participate in a tradition of creating a quilt in her remembrance. But more than thread goes into this quilt: blood and tears, history and ritual are woven into the fabric of this quilt as the sisters aim to unlock their past and chart their future after they discover and read their mother’s final will.

A unique tale about loss and how we seek to define our own legacies, Katori Hall’s sparkling writing provides juicy roles for the four sisters contending with grief on both personal and collective levels. Death is never easy, and Hall’s play provides no easy answers while illuminating the necessity and thorniness of sisterhood and community.
