More information about Floyd Collins

Floys Collins is a unique musical in many ways: it’s a bio-musical, one based on a real American adventurer when many today are based on the lives of pop stars. It also has a distinct bluegrass-infused score. Finally, it introduced audiences to Adam Guettel, an accomplished composer who would go on to win a Tony for The Light in the Piazza.

The musical is also a special reunion: bookwriter Tina Landau, a Tony nominee for directing SpongeBob SquarePants, also directed this original production at Playwrights Horizons. She returns now, decades after her career was just starting, to stage the show anew in a bold, thrilling production.

Most of all, the musical is cherished for its enormous heart and how it portrays media sensationalism as Floyd Collins’ disappearance into a cave sparked one of the nation’s first true media storms — here, all woven together by a gorgeous, heart-stopping score.

What to watch for

  • Adam Guettel, the composer, has a rich musical theatre history: he is the grandson of Richard Rodgers.
  • Floyd Collins was a part of the “Kentucky Cave Wars,” when spelunkers and property owners competed to exploit the bounty of caves for commercial profit from tourists.
  • At the Obie Awards, the original off-Broadway show was given the award for Best Music.
  • Ben Brantley, in his review for The New York Times, wrote, “Mr. Guettel establishes himself as a young composer of strength and sophistication.”
