More information about Grief Camp

Founded as an ensemble of impassioned student artists in 1985, Atlantic Theater Company has grown into a powerhouse off-Broadway company. As a producer of compelling new works, the company is committed to championing the stories from new and established artists alike, and with Grief Camp the theater offers Eliya Smith her off-Broadway debut.

The play features half a dozen teenagers coming together one summer to cope with loss together. Awkward ties and plenty of humor shine through in Les Waters’ production. A fierce advocate for new and often experimental plays, Waters is an Obie Award winner and served as the Artistic Director of the Actors Theatre of Louisville.

Featuring a sprawling cast and some music, this new play will give curious audiences a lot to chew on as its characters process loss and adolescence. Stirring and provocative, the play is a highly anticipated one from a writer on the rise.

What to watch for

  • A new-play director, Les Waters’ productions have run the gamut from containing hyper-naturalism (The Christians) to supernaturalism (The Thin Place).
  • Eliya Smith has developed works at HERE Arts Center, Ice Factory Festival, and A.R.T
  • The cast features six teenagers and two adult roles plus a guitarist.
  • Sandra Oh, BD Wong, and Tony Shalhoub all appeared at the Atlantic earlier this season.
