Head to the south while seeing Lowcountry in New York. Named for a geographic and cultural region mostly stretching along South Carolina's coast, the lowcountry is a world unto itself, and one Rosebrock, as a Carolinas native, is quite familiar with. Now, audiences can take a trip there and see what happens when a failing actress returns to her rural home and finds romance with an anything-but-normal lover: a disgraced high school teacher. More information about Lowcountry

In the unique new romantic comedy Lowcountry, Tammy is an aspiring actress who’s down on her luck. Jobs aren’t coming through, so she is now taking work as a gig employee — and she’s heading back home to catch her breath. There, she hops on the dating apps and swipes right on someone she learns is a disgraced high school teacher — and someone who only just got out of an ankle bracelet.

A new play about the psychic distress of looking for love in the digital age and the carceral state, Lowcountry is a world premiere that is one of a kind in its look at modern relationships. Playwright Abby Rosebrock is known for depicting pointed, spiky, and utterly refreshing female characters, as with her previous Atlantic show, Blue Ridge, which starred Marin Ireland. Now, she brings a new story to the off-Broadway theatre that also centers an idiosyncratic female lead. Get ready for a special trip to the lowcountry.

What to watch for

  • Playwright Abby Rosebrock returns to the Atlantic with a new play specifically written for the theatre following its commission. The theatre develops new work, workshopping plays from rising and established playwrights.
  • Working with Lynn Nottage, Suzan Lori-Parks, and many other big-name playwrights, director Jo Bonney is a new-play advocate and the winner of two Obies.
  • The Atlantic is a celebrated off-Broadway theatre known for its many shows that have gone on to Broadway and win Tony Awards, as with Spring Awakening, Kimberly Akimbo, and The Band’s Visit.
  • Plays about the Carolinas are not particularly common, so this play offers a special window into a life rarely seen onstage.
