More information about Walden

In this new science fiction drama, two estranged sisters reunite in a remote cabin after years separated due to fraught relationships and interstellar travel. Stella (Emmy Rossum) and her fiancé Bryan await Cassie (Zoë Winters); both sisters were raised to be top NASA scientists, and their astronaut father paved the way toward their success. However, in the time since, they have taken wildly different paths.

A celebrated figure, Cassie just returned from a successful moon landing, but Stella has left NASA behind. Directed by Tony Award nominee Whitney White (Jaja's African Hair Braiding), Amy Berrman’s play is an engrossing and intimate drama that wrestles between the gravitational pulls of duty and desire.

That the sisters are twins further juxtaposes their differences. Each actress, however, is greatly regarded: Winters has been an award-winning off-Broadway mainstay for years, and Rossum is more known for her film and TV work, including in Shameless, Mystic River, and Cold Pursuit.

What to watch for

  • While many know Zoë Winters from TV, she is no stranger to intimate dramas, and a few years back she was off Broadway in the Pulitzer-nominated Heroes of the Fourth Turning.
  • Science fiction is a fixture of film and books but not always as prominent on stage; The Children was one recent show that dealt with society after a collapse, and this show looks at the earth on the brink of catastrophe.
  • Second Stage is a home for adventurous new work and has produced celebrated productions including Dear Evan Hansen and the recent Tony-winning revival of Take Me Out.
  • The London production enjoyed strong reviews; London Theatre called Walden a “topical futuristic play” that “asks big philosophical questions and certainly sparks discussion about what we can do to be more responsible citizens of the world.”
