Operation Mincemeat is a musical based on the Allies’ war operation of the same name that helped them win World War II. Much more than a history lesson, the uproarious comedy is parts farce, thriller, and Ian Fleming-style spy caper.
David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson, and Zoë Roberts — collectively known as the comedy group SplitLip — wrote the book, music, and lyrics for Operation Mincemeat. All make their Broadway debuts, and all but Hagan also appear in the cast.
Robert Hastie, the National Theatre's deputy artistic director, directs this hit show. He also staged it in London.
An age recommendation for Operation Mincemeat has yet to be set. All Broadway audiences must be older than 4.
London Theatre describes the music of Operation Mincemeat in this way: "There are glimmers of Monty Python, Mel Brooks, and Gilbert and Sullivan. The wide-ranging score features patter songs, edging into Hamilton rap territory, as well as jazzy 1940s-style harmonies and a big glitzy Hollywood finale."
In a word: yes! The show scored dozens of five-star reviews (the most in West End history), won the Olivier for Best New Musical, and is one of the most highly anticipated shows coming to Broadway.
