About Conversations With Mother

Get Conversations with Mother tickets and see Caroline Aaron and Matt Doyle go head to head in this bracing new comedy about mother-son relationships that drive us up a wall. If it's not one thing, it's a mother — and Matthew Lombardo's comedy knows how to go for the funny bone, and the heart. Conversations with Mother plays for a limited run only this winter and spring at Theatre 555 on 42nd Street. Set an alert for when Conversations with Mother tickets go on sale with TodayTix to see these stars of stage and screen duke it out and unpack their hilarious relationship.

Experience Conversations with Mother in New York. SAG winner Aaron, known for playing Joel's powerful mother on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, brings a similar flair to this role as an Italian mamma with plenty of drama. Tony winner Doyle (Company) plays her rudderless son, and no one knows how to push each other's buttons as well as these two. More information about Conversations With Mother

Playwright Matthew Lombardo is known for his works that celebrate strong female characters, but he's also not afraid to show their thorns, flaws, and biting humor. That was the case in two of his Broadway works, High starring Kathleen Turner and Looped, which featured Valerie Harper in a Tony-nominated performance, and it's certaintly what he is offering here. However, unlike in those other fictional pieces created or based on others' lives, here he infuses Conversations with Mother with a more personal, intimate bent: the play is semi-autobiographical and takes a page from his own upbringing as a gay son in an Italian household.

Matt Doyle needs no introduction as someone who has already played a gay, neurotic character to great acclaim as seen in Company where he stole the show singing "Not Getting Married Today," and Caroline Allen is another actor tailor-made for this role given the powerful people she's played in Sleepless in Seattle and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

What to watch for

  • Matt Doyle is a Broadway alum known for his roles in Bye Bye Birdie, Spring Awakening, War Horse, and more.
  • Caroline Allen has a storied film career, having appeared in multiple Mike Nichols, Nora Ephron, and Woody Allen films.
  • Noah Himmelstein directs this new comedy and has had his work seen regionally and off Broadway.
  • Off Broadway, Matthew Lombardo penned Who's Holiday, the irreverent comedy with Lesli Margherita as an adult Cindy Lou Who at the Westside Theatre (Lucille Award Nomination for Outstanding Solo Show).
