About Becoming Eve

Set an alert for when Becoming Eve tickets go on sale on TodayTix to see a fierce, intellectual, and heartfelt new play starring Tommy Dorfman, the trailblazing actor seen on TV in 13 Reasons Why and on Broadway in Romeo + Juliet. Based on Abby Chava Stein’s groundbreaking memoir, Becoming Eve plays at Abrons Arts Center as a New York Theatre Workshop production.

Becoming Eve in New York is a highly theatrical new play that combines puppetry, memoir, and deep conversations about faith. Dorfman stars as Chava — a trans rabbi contending with her upbringing and the widening distance between orthodox and modernity — in Becoming Eve off Broadway. Raised to be the next important voice of the dynastic Hasidic faith, Chava’s identity clashes with the strictly binary world in which she was raised. Now, can she move forward with her selfhood while maintaining her religion? As with faith, in this play, the guide to clearer answers is through richer questions.

More information about Becoming Eve

How far will you go to protect and honor your faith? This new play sees a family on the brink of tearing itself apart as the High Holidays quickly approach. Three rabbis offer spiritual guidance, even as one’s trans identity shows rifts in their varied views. Full of secrets that are unearthed and introspective looks at faith, Becoming Eve is an enriching theatrical event and a singular dissection of contemporary Judaism.

This play is deeply personal — it is based on Abby Chava Stein’s extraordinary memoir, Becoming Eve: My Journey from Ultra-Orthodox Rabbi to Transgender Woman. Stein is the first woman, and the first openly transgender woman, to have been ordained by an Orthodox Jewish institution. In 2018, she co-founded Sacred Space, a multi-faith project "which celebrates women and non-binary people of all faith traditions.” Her progressive views have made her a pioneering voice; now, her story comes to the stage for the first time.
