Lizz Wright performed as a part of American Songbook in 2009, and the NY Times described the singer-songwriter as “an awesome talent [who] stands in a direct line of descent from Odetta through Tracy Chapman, singers whose source of sustenance is the African-American spiritual tradition.” A lot of life has happened for Wright since, and her latest album, 2017’s “potent, sanctified” Grace (Guardian, U.K.), reveals a register that lends a vulnerability to her sensual contralto voice and regal poise. Wright felt compelled to reconnect with her Southern heritage after the 2016 election. The resulting sound boosts the down-home blues and gospel elements of her musical style that also traverses jazz, folk, and confessional singer-songwriter traditions, arriving at a place where all are welcome.
